Serenade

2015

8 minutes; for Soprano, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet, Trombone, Percussion (Crotales, Glockenspiel, Tamtam, Triangle, Vibraphone), Celesta and Piano. Text by Edgar Allan Poe.

This modern setting of Edgar Allan Poe’s text from 1850 gives life to one of his rarer works. The poet’s romantic words about an untouched lover are voiced by the Soprano. She in turn is supported by an effective and unusual small ensemble of warmth, contrasted by metals in the percussion. Recommended ensemble size is eight, including conductor, though the piece can be performed by as few as five.

Premiered in 2015 by students of California State University, Sacramento.
